Even though it is easy to recognize the comfort, control, energy saving and modular benefits of a VAV Diffuser system, the benefits cannot be fully unlocked unless they are integrated with an Intelligent Control System.

MLM or Multi-Loop-Modular Controls were born from over 30 years of VAV diffuser experience and Rickard’s vision to enhance the benefits of VAV diffusion. Comfort can be customised for large zones or specific individuals, powerful diffuser management software gives the user complete control over entire buildings diffusers, intelligent energy saving software and hardware enhances energy savings and the modular benefits of VAV diffusion are maximised to allow complete layout flexibility without adding unnecessary cost.

Rickard’s MLM controls reduce the cost of a BMS connection by decentralizing the BMS access point. Since a single Master Communications Unit (LonWorks or BACnet) connects up to 60 diffusers the cost of connection is reduced considerably.

Rickard’s modular controls also allow hardware modularity, a number of diffuser accessories are available that are easy to fit to a diffuser. Available accessories include on-board temperature control, remote temperature control, top up neck heaters, airflow sensors (for commissioning, airflow trimming and air-conditioning billing calculations) and occupancy sensing that works with our light switching interface and diffuser to switch lights and close the diffuser damper to save fan energy when a zone is unoccupied.

Rickard diffusers are modular and are easy to change from Masters to Slaves on-site. For a diffuser to be a Master, a controller that is activated should be fitted. There are two types of controllers, an on-board controller that uses an on-board (on-diffuser) sensor or a remote controller that uses its own built in sensor to sense room temperature and control a zone. The Rickard MLM Software is used to activate a Master, designate a zone number, link Slave diffusers to that zone, read diffuser status and read and write diffuser settings. The Rickard software is free of charge.

A Power Supply Unit (PSU2) supplies power to up to 15 diffusers. Any combination of Master or Slave diffusers can make up the 15 diffusers powered by a single PSU. A single inter-diffuser cable that carries both power and communications links diffusers in a daisy chain manner. A maximum length of 150m of inter-diffuser cables and up to 20 cables (Rickard inter-diffuser and extension cables only) can be used per PSU2. A USB module and laptop with Rickard MLM software loaded makes it possible to connect to all of the diffusers connected to a power supply. Diffuser settings, status and inter-diffuser relationships can be read and edited using the software.

The software uses a simple and intuitive interface that allows the user to position and locate diffusers on a floor plan that represent an actual installation. Diffuser icons represent the diffusers on the floor plan and maximising a diffuser icon gives access to its settings and status.

When an installation is fitted with multiple PSU’s and management of the buildings energy and comfort is required from a central point, PSU’s can be connected together using a Master Communications Unit (MCU). A MCU can connect to 4 PSU’s and therefore a total of 4 x 15 diffusers i.e. 60 diffusers at a time. Multiple MCU’s can be connected together to manage the entire building. MCU’s are the access point through which a Building Management System (BMS) connects to the Rickard system. Rickard, BACnet (TCP/IP, MS/TP) and LonWorks MCU variants are available. Since only one MCU access point is required for every 60 diffusers, the cost of connecting to a BMS is drastically reduced. Every MCU variant (BMS or Rickard stand-alone) gives access to 60 diffusers at a time by using the Rickard Software.

NOTE: Joining cables by cutting and joining voids Rickards warranty. Cables that have been cut and joined negatively effect the reliability and quality of the communication signal on a channel and can potentially damage components.

To maximise the modularity and flexibility of a VAV diffuser system, Rickard have designed their diffuser controls so that it is simple and easy to upgrade a slave to a master. There are two master control options, namely an on-board and a remote (wall thermostat) controller option. By mounting the diffusers slave controller (diffuser controller) to the diffusers trim plate (plaque), an on-board controller can be plugged in to the diffuser without needing access to the ceiling. On-board master diffusers can also be ordered directly from Rickard. Since a cable is required for the wall thermostat, a connection on the back of the diffuser is provided. An interface box is fitted to the back of the diffuser for the wall thermostat, supply air temperature sensor and inter-diffuser connections.

Rickard controls have been specifically designed so that accessories are easy to attach. This modular system makes existing systems easy to upgrade, production of product faster and fitment on site quick and easy. Available accessories include on-board temperature control, remote temperature control, top up neck heaters, airflow sensors (for commissioning, airflow trimming and air-conditioning billing calculations) and occupancy sensing that works with our light switching interface and diffuser to switch lights and close the diffuser damper to save fan energy when a zone is unoccupied. On-board occupancy sensors and on-board controllers can be fitted without entering the ceiling space. Airflow sensors, top up neck heaters and light switching modules are easily plugged into an existing ribbon cable on the back of the diffuser. All modules are designed to be easily fitted to a standard diffuser.

WALL THERMOSTAT/REMOTE TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER

The Rickard MLM Software is used to commission Rickard diffusers and manage an entire buildings individual comfort levels. Diffuser settings, status and inter-diffuser relationships can be read and edited using the software. Rickard MLM Software is free of charge.

The software uses a simple and intuitive interface that allows the user to position and locate diffusers on a floor plan that represents an actual installation. Diffuser icons represent the diffusers on the floor plan and maximising a diffuser icon gives access to its settings and status.

Since every diffuser has a unique address, it is possible to link the address with its position. Every diffuser comes with 2 labels, one to identify the diffuser and the other to mark its position on a floor layout plan. Should a diffuser be lost, a ping button allows the user to identify the diffuser on the software and position it correctly. The Software incorporates a Project Selector for easy navigation between floors and sections. Once a Project has been commissioned it can be saved.

It is not necessary to run MLM software for the Rickard MLM system to operate.
